How Often Should You Update Content for AI Search?

Publishing a page is not the end of its value.

AI search platforms often rely on current information when answering questions, comparing businesses and recommending products or services. If your website contains outdated facts, expired offers or information that no longer reflects your expertise, those signals can weaken how confidently AI systems use your content.

But that does not mean every page needs to be rewritten each month.

There Is No Universal Schedule

The right update frequency depends on the subject. Content about pricing, laws, software, products or industry trends may require frequent review. A clear explanation of a stable service may remain accurate much longer.

The better question is not “How old is this page?” It is “Does this page still provide the best available answer?”

As explained in “How AI Determines Which Brands Are Most Relevant,” recency can support relevance when the user’s question depends on current information. It does not automatically make newer content more useful.

Update Content When the Answer Changes

A page should be reviewed when:

  • Prices, services or product details change
  • New regulations or industry standards take effect
  • Statistics, examples or external references become outdated
  • Customer questions reveal missing information
  • The company enters new markets or changes its positioning
  • New expertise allows the topic to be explained more completely

Meaningful updates improve accuracy and usefulness. Changing a date or rewriting a few sentences without adding value does not.

Outdated Information Creates Conflicting Signals

Problems emerge when old and new information remain live at the same time.

If one page lists an outdated service area while another reflects the current market, AI systems must determine which version to trust. The same problem occurs when pricing, credentials, leadership details or service descriptions differ across a website.

“How AI Assistants Handle Conflicting Information Online” better explains why inconsistent sources reduce confidence and can lead to incomplete or inaccurate answers.

Build Content Maintenance Into Your Strategy

Create a review schedule based on how quickly each type of information changes. High-risk pages may need quarterly review, while evergreen resources may only require an annual check.

During each review:

  • Confirm that every factual claim remains accurate
  • Replace outdated statistics and examples
  • Repair broken links
  • Add useful developments or frequently asked questions
  • Remove sections that no longer serve the topic

The goal is not to make content look new. It is to keep it reliable. Reliable pages are also more likely to meet the standards described in “What Makes Content ‘Citable’ in AI-Generated Answers.”
